Car dealer marketing in 2026 — what actually moves metal

6 August 2026 · 2 min read

Dealer marketing advice tends to be either agency-speak or "post more on social". Here's what reliably moves metal for UK independents in 2026, in rough order of return.

1. Local search is still the whole game

Most buyers start at Google with "used [model] near me". Two assets decide whether they find you:

  • Google Business Profile — complete, photographed, reviewed and replied-to.
  • Your own website with every car marked up in Vehicle structured data so stock appears in search directly. (What the site needs.)

Do these two properly before spending a pound anywhere else.

2. Reviews are your brand

For an independent, reviews are the brand. Build the habit: ask at handover, every time, with a QR code on the desk. Reply to every review, especially the bad ones — buyers read the replies to see who they're dealing with.

3. Video walkarounds

A 90-second phone walkaround per car outperforms another ten photos. Post it on the listing, YouTube and your Business Profile. Buyers who've "met" the car and heard a human are warmer leads and better viewings.

4. Speed is marketing

Every marketing pound is wasted if the enquiry sits unanswered overnight. The first dealer to reply usually wins — measure your reply time and get it under ten minutes, evenings included. (The lead playbook.)

5. Paid, but only on your own turf

Classified spend is fine, but it rents someone else's audience. If you run paid search, land it on your own stock pages where the lead and the margin are yours, and where the buyer isn't shown three competitors in a comparison strip.

6. Give buyers something to play with

Interactive beats static. A build-your-car page — pick the alloys, see the total — keeps buyers on your listing and hands you a bigger deal when they enquire. (How add-on profit works.)
